We've had a lot of supporters ask us if we could sell the "bean tree", formally known as the Northern Catalpa (Catalpa speciosa). Popular in Ottawa and Toronto, along with many other places, most of you will have passed under one of these majestic giants without knowing much about them - except to note the fruits, which looks like a giant bean pod!
The Northern Catalpa is a medium sized shade tree with enormous leaves resulting in a very coarse texture. In the late-spring and early summer, this tree has very showy white and purple orchid-like flowers. These shift into long narrow beanpod-shaped fruit in fall that are very identifiable and ornamental.
The Northern Catalpa is known for drawing hummingbirds and pollinators to a yard. Added bonus for our region - the deer tend to leave this tree alone in favour of more tasty tree bark and leaves.
At full maturity in ideal conditions, the Northern Catalpa will grow to be 55 feet tall with a canopy spread of 30 feet. It grows at a fast rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for 70 years or more.
This tree does best in full sun to partial shade. It is an amazingly adaptable plant, tolerating both dry conditions and even some standing water. It is considered to be drought-tolerant, and thus makes an ideal choice for xeriscaping or the moisture-conserving landscape. It is not particular as to soil type or pH, and is able to handle environmental salt. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. This species is native to parts of North America, but not Canada specifically.
