Tamarack
The Tamarack is an unique and beautiful tree that's worth having in your yard! It is Ontario's only native deciduous conifer. With the appearance of an evergreen, it loses its needles in the fall and is cone bearing. the needles are soft and turn from bluish green in summer to a visually striking golden yellow in the fall. Also known as the Eastern larch, the tamarack is found from eastern Yukon and Inuvik, Northwest Territories east to Newfoundland. It is a versatile species, tolerates drier soils, or moist to wet soil in a full sun location. Ideal locations; a shoreline, tolerates flooding or good garden conditions. Plant away from the road as they are sensitive to road salt spray. Fun fact: the name Tamarack is the Algonquin name for the species and means 'wood used for snowshoes'.
