Lilac, President Grevy
The President Grevy Lilac is a multi-stemmed deciduous shrub with an upright spreading habit of growth. It has a relatively coarse texture that can be used to stand it apart from other landscape plants with finer foliage.
It is a classic spring blooming French hybrid that features exquisitely scented double pale blue flowers in upright panicles. It grows upright, is very hardy, tends to sucker and ideal for screening. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil.
The President Grevy Lilac is a good choice for attracting butterflies to your yard, but is not particularly attractive to deer who tend to leave it alone in favour of tastier treats.
This shrub can require regular care and upkeep, depending on your landscaping goals. If looking to prune, it should only be done after flowering to avoid removing any of the current season's flowers.
The President Grevy Lilac has been awarded a "Top Lilac" by Better Homes & Gardens for its fragrance and colour:
Another old-time favorite, 'President Grevy' offers double soft, light blue flowers that are wonderfully scented. "'President Grevy's been around a long time. It's a grower's favorite because you can't kill it," says Ted Collings, Lilac Expert at Lilac Hill Nursery.
