Magnolia, Susan (Container)
Perfect for smaller gardens, the Susan Magnolia is a slow growth deciduous shrub that features fragrant and stunning red-purple flowers in mid-to-late spring. The goblet shaped blossoms can reach up to 5 inches across and have 6 slightly twisted petals that are purple-red on the outside and paler toned on the inside. This hybrid Magnolia blooms at an early age and makes an elegant, small specimen tree.
The foliage of the Susan Magnolia is a medium bright green during most of the growing season, shifting to golden-yellow in the fall months.
This magnolia grows in a more upright, compact style, making it ideal for properties where space is at a premium. In most cases, the Susan Magnolia will reach 9-12 feet tall and 6-10 feet wide at full maturity.
This shrub prefers a full sun to partial shade location and is best grown in consistently moist, slightly acidic and organically rich soil. Magnolias, including the Susan, are highly adaptable to clay, loam or sandy soils, but will not thrive in wet or poorly drained soils. It is best to provide this magnolia with a location that is sheltered from the cold and high winds, as early buds and flowers can be damaged.
If you are seeking a specimen shrub that is sure to catch the eye, look no further than the Susan Magnolia.
